Princesses Popcorn and Positive Lessons with Ralph Breaks The Internet

Want to have a perfect family movie night? Great news! “Ralph Breaks The Internet” is NOW available instantly on Digital 4K Ultra HD™/HD/SD and Movies Anywhere and physically on Blu-ray and DVD so you have the flexibility to watch the movie instantly and on a variety of different devices of your choosing.

I’ve been waiting FOREVER for the Ralph Breaks The Internet in-home release. We saw Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” when it came out on theaters, but this film has so many wonderful moments, lessons, and Easter eggs that I also wanted to be able to enjoy it from the comfort of my home, with easy access to the PAUSE button.

Of course, I gotta say I’m very familiar with “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” since I had the privilege of seeing early footage at D23 Expo, went to an early press day with the filmmakers (Rich Moore, Phil Johnston, and Clark Spence) and animators, and got to attend the World Premiere and Red Carpet for this Oscar®-nominated animated feature.

In Ralph Breaks The Internet, we reunite with our beloved characters video-game bad guy Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman), and our favorite couple: Fix-It Felix Jr. and Sergeant Calhoun (Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch).

We also get to know some fabulous new characters: search engine named KnowsMore (Alan Tudyk), tough racer Shank (voiced by Gal Gadot), and trendsetter and head algorithm Yesss (voiced by Taraji P. Henson).

And in addition to the spectacular main voice cast for Ralph Breaks The Internet, the film features an epic Disney Princess Scene that reunited all our favorite Disney Princesses and the (living) voices behind them, as well as the Princess Guy, the legendary animator that brought most of them to life.

There’s no doubt that Ralph Breaks The Internet features groundbreaking animation and highly entertaining content, and that’s why it won the winning the top spot at the domestic box office for three consistent weeks and grossing more than $435.1 million to date!

But a powerful reason behind Disney’s Ralph Breaks The Internet’s success is the timeless positive lessons it can teach about friendship and The Internet. Walt Disney Animation Studios once again brought us a story that is meaningful for everyone and that can spark deepening conversations among people of all ages.

In the hilarious, highspeed sequel to 2012’s Oscar®-nominated “Wreck-It Ralph,” besties Ralph and Vanellope travel to the expansive, fast-paced, vibrant world of the internet attempting to save Vanellope’s game Sugar Rush.

Let’s explore 5 lessons we can learn and discuss with our children during our Ralph Breaks The Internet movie night.

*****Spoilers Ahead*****

Get comfy like your favorite princess, grab your popcorn, and get ready to teach your children positive lessons from Ralph Breaks The Internet that will stay with them forever! Or in the words of Wreck-It Ralph:

“Start churning butter and put on your church shoes, little sister, because we’re about to blast off!”

Positive Lesson #1 ~ Our insecurities harm our relationships

Insecurity is uncertainty or anxiety about oneself and lack of confidence. When you’re insecure, you are defensive, feel constantly threatened and attacked, and need consistent reassurance in a relationship.

Wreck-It Ralph fears he will lose Vanellope’s friendship and when his feelings of inadequacy resurface, his damaging behavior could sabotage the bond they shared.

I discussed this at length with my teens, especially around the topic of dating and jealousy. I pointed it out to my five-year-old so it can serve as a future reference she can understand. This is a method that has worked with my oldest in the past – when something arises, we can ask “Remember that scene?” and they can instantly get it because it’s no longer a foreign concept to them and they have some perspective as to how the story ended.

Positive Lesson #2 ~ People need freedom to be who they are

Healthy friendships, and relationships in general, are mutually supportive, rather than controlling and manipulative.

Ralph doesn’t want Vanellope to change, but Vanellope must change to be happy. A true friend is happy when their friend is happy, even when they have to go separate ways or don’t agree with (or even understand) their path. People are happy when they are free to be who they are.

I feel this concept is harder to learn as adults, so it will resonate with kids of all ages. Feeling genuinely happy for others’ success and happiness is such an essential quality to living a peaceful, joyful, and connected life.

Positive Lesson #3 ~ There’s duality and opposition in all things

Just like a knife is a tool that we use in food preparation to nurture our bodies, it can also cut and make us bleed, technology is a tool that can be both beneficial and detrimental to us.

Ralph Breaks The Internet is filled with examples of how a wonderful place like the Internet can also have a dark side.

I talked to my little one about how Ralph and Vanellope used the distraction to go to the web unauthorized and then they got into trouble by interacting with others at eBay because they didn’t know the site well or how it worked.

Elisha, Elyssa, and I discussed how enticing ads and pop-ups that can lead us dangerous sites and deadly viruses, and how people could be tempted to do just about anything to get likes and engagement or to make money online. Since being online is such a huge part of my profession, I have constant conversations about this with them.

There are plenty of angles to teach our kids online safety, as well as explain and reinforce the rules and agreements you have set for technology usage.

Positive Lesson #4 ~ Words are powerful

Possibly the most obvious lesson in Ralph Breaks The Internet, of course, is “don’t read the comments.” More accurately, I teach my kids not to take the comments personally.

As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “no one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” Cyberbullying is a sad epidemic because anyone can hide behind a screen and type hateful and harmful words, so our kids will certainly come across this ugly truth at some point. This also happens offline more than we know. Even when I homeschool, my daughters have had to deal with unkind words, snarky comments, and gossip at Church!

The positive spin to this lesson is that just like words can hurt, they can also lift and heal. We discuss how Ralph and Vanellope are able to heal their relationship as they have truthful and transparent conversations and express their caring, understanding, compassionate words for one another. Kind words can create happy endings!

Positive Lesson #5 ~ We are not that different

I asked my children:

Did you ever think all the Disney Princesses were so alike?

Did you ever imagine that Vanellope would fit in with the official Disney Princesses?

How can Vanellope be so close with both the Disney Princesses and Shank and her crew?

I loved interviewing Pamela Ribon and learning how she came up with the Disney Princess scene because, well, it’s brilliant, but it also points out how even though we may want to travel to Oh My Disney and find out which Disney Princess we are, we are all a bit like all of them, in the end.

When people are open to putting down their weapons (and broken glass slippers) and asking questions to learn about and from one another, they can realize we are more similar than we are different and, not only we can get along and have a great time together, we can also put our individual differences to work and make something wonderful happen.

Ralph Breaks the Internet: LIGHTING – Lighting is among the final stages of shot production in animation, though the lighting department is integral to the look of the film as production gets underway. Lighting artists can place individual lights within a scene, but for a scene as big as the one in which Ralph and Vanellope visit the internet for the first time, technology is utilized to place multiples of similar lights—like those on a building, for example—creating a more efficient process for dealing with a massive and diverse number of light sources. I haven't seen the film yet, so I'm afraid to read the lessons because of the spoilers. I know from the original movie, the story has heart, so I am sure that my son and I will have plenty to discuss about the new movie!
